Proud of my boy Rob Westerman and all the work he and his church, SNC Norwood, are doing in Cincinnati. He recorded this with his friend and talented Cincinnati native, Mike Lewis of Jesus Painter Ministries. This is much more than a ‘pay it forward’ initiative. As Rob explained to me of all the final quotes Paul shared from Jesus with the Ephesian leaders before he went back to Jerusalem, it was this quote from Jesus that he left them with in Acts chapter 20, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” The full verse is here:

Acts 20:35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. ”

Here is the local news coverage. Just one day after it was shared it had over 5.1 Million views, and now 10 million views as of this post! For a few hours work and $400 dollars it’s a good lesson to any business or organization to create moments that are sharable, and doing it is NOT expensive. As SNC Norwood states on their facebook page, just $400 showed love to over 5 million people.

So go, and give. It’s better than receiving.

Be Steadfast.

Standard

This is one of my favorite verses. It represents one of the three commitments I have made to myself and others.

1) I will embrace responsibility.

2) I will reject passivity.

3) I will believe in God for the greater reward.

Recruiting volunteers, and good ones, is important for any organization that depends on good people to keep it moving. I’m pumped about this photo shoot and campaign I helped develop. The campaign has a few different goals, most of which is to say thanks to some key volunteers and highlight their volunteer role to others. The campaign also helps recruit people who get a quick understanding that they don’t have to be an expert in a particular area to help out. They just need to be available and willing. These photos really capture the culture of the church by highlighting the faces of the volunteers who keep it going. While the pics are nice, the story of each volunteer that’s shared in the posts really help convey the message. Enjoy the photos and to all the great volunteers of 4CornersChurch – You are amazing!

Show’m what to expect

Bible Jesus 4CornersChurch.com video

One of the most valuable things you can do is remove the doubt for people looking at your product – and your church is a product. Families shop, visitor dip in and out without you knowing, and people in the community drive by your building and wonder, “What’s going on in there?”. At 4Corners Church we set out to develop a video that did just that. We wanted to show people what to expect on a typical Sunday morning. Staff member Lisa wrote a killer script, other staff members weighed in, volunteer Katie did a great job on camera with her infectious personality and my boy Bill and I shot and edited. Mostly importantly, everyone in the church did what they always do every week to make 4 Corners a great place to visit and an even greater place to attend on a regular basis.

How do you convey what happens in your church to visitors before they get there? How easy is it for your church members to share with their friends? If you’ve shot one of these type of videos, post the link below. I would love to see it.

Creativity in Church Spaces

Standard

How are you transforming your space into something that turns people toward a posture of worship? Are you called to rebuild the creative walls of the Church? Man, that calling resonates with me. The Church largely has built spaces for function and less for definition, but what’s emerged is a canvas to play with. Bending light is a high calling. The journey of being creative with our spaces and using them for something other than a place to sit in, is a journey that is transformational and demands our interactions with others. Watch this video from my friend and someone I highly admire for his creativity and leadership, Luke McElroy of Salt Nashville for insight into his manifesto for the Salt movement.

Take my unsolicited recommendation to consider attending Salt Nashville this year.

Church Social Media – New Site

In 2009 I launched a business to help churches, ministries, and businesses in the Christian space with their marketing and social media plans, content strategies, and management. With the help of one of my long time friends and favorite designers, Rachel Parks, we launched IceCream Social Experts. Images of the site are below. We had a good run, working with major artist, ministries and churches around the world. But, the old saying is true – those who don’t change die. It was time to shut the site down and start fresh. For all the companies, friends and churches that we have worked with – the future is now.

So I’ve launched CHURCHsocialMEDIA.com to highlight one thing for people, churches, ministries and businesses:

Great stuff to share.

I moved in this direction to replace telling churches why and how they need help with marketing, branding, creative and campaigns – to actually make a site that serves the purpose of helping. If businesses, churches and ministries need help beyond ideas and encouragement, they will ask.

Future Past from John Mark McMillan

Standard

The new song, Future Past, from John Mark McMillan is a worship cult classic. It will infect the Church. If you’ve followed John Mark’s music you know it’s been a progression to this sound, to these lyrics, and a story that’s brought us here–to this. From How He Loves, Skeleton Bones, Carbon Ribs, The Medicine, through Economy, some killer videos, nights and nights in all our cities, days weeks and months away from his family, and lots of wind through the windpipe…. to this. Future Past is one of those worship songs I hope rises with a fury. I can’t describe this song more than the videos and lyrics below. In all the years hearing people describe and deconstruct, “What is worship?”, it’s John Mark that I’ve heard add most to the conversation, and often with the simplest of descriptions. I love John Mark McMillan’s quote: “Worship isn’t music, you know, just like love isn’t kissing–but where there’s worship there will be music, like where there’s love there will be kissing.”

Watch the videos, read the lyrics, get the song and worship with it.

Lyrics to Future Past by John Mark McMillan

You hold the reins on the sun and moon
Like horses driven by kings
You cover the mountains and valleys below
With the breadth of Your mighty wings
All treasures of wisdom and things to be known
Are hidden inside of your hand
In this fortunate turn of events
You ask me to be Your friend

You, you are my first, you are my last
You are my future and my past
You, you are my first, you are my last
You are my future and my past

The constellations are swimming inside
The breath of your desires
Where could I run, where could I hide
From Your heart’s jealous fire
All treasures of wisdom and things to be known
Are hidden inside your hand
In this fortunate turn of events
You ask me to be Your friend

You, you are my first, you are my last
You are my future and my past
You, you are my first, you are my last
You are my future and my past

You are the beginning and the end
You are the beginning and the end

You, you are my first, you are my last
You are my future and my past
You, you are my first, you are my last
You are my future and my past
